Ate Van Apeldoorn minimalist desk, The Netherlands, 1960s–70s
A rare and refined minimalist desk designed by Ate Van Apeldoorn for Houtwerk Hattem, The Netherlands, circa 1960s–70s. Crafted entirely from solid pine and assembled with the maker’s distinctive exposed joints, this piece reflects the philosophy of honest construction and respect for natural materials.
The design is defined by its pure architectural lines and balanced proportions. The simplicity of the form allows the craftsmanship and subtle detailing to take centre stage, resulting in a calm and timeless presence. Influences of designers such as Sven Larsson, Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Chapo are evident in the clarity, functionality and sculptural restraint of the piece.
Finished in a deep black stain, the desk reveals a rich and tactile texture, enhancing the grain of the pine while giving the design a contemporary and graphic character. The contrast between the strong silhouette and the warmth of the wood creates a refined tension between austerity and materiality.
Both functional and elegant, this desk integrates effortlessly into modern, minimalist or eclectic interiors. A rare and authentic example of Dutch craftsmanship and design.
In very good vintage condition with minor traces of use, contributing to its unique patina and character. Desk chair and decoration not included in the shown price.
